New Hope Community Bikes started in 2008 as an initiative of New Hope Church. We are a registered charity and social enterprise that seeks to get more people on affordable, reliable bicycles and provide employment and job training opportunities for youth.

We believe bicycles can help build a healthier, more environmentally friendly community and that everyone should have access to affordable, efficient transportation. We build and restore bikes to a variety of price points and rider specifications, offering everything from cheap winter commuters to unique one of a kind custom bikes.

Services

DIY Repairs

Tools and shop space are available whenever the shop is open on a first-come, first-served basis. This means if it’s busy you may have to wait for someone to finish with a workspace before you can start your own DIY.

We offer a sliding scale for tool use and stand space. $10/hour if you do the work yourself and up to $65/hour if we help out. If you don’t have the money to pay, that’s okay, pay what you can.

Used parts are available for use at a cost of $8.50/part or pair if applicable.

Bike Repair Workshops

New Hope Community Bikes offers structured, hands-on repair nights that cover the basics of bike repair. A three hour session will provide the rider with a better understanding of how a bicycle works, how to fix basic issues and how to name the different parts of the bike. The course runs once a month on a Wednesday night for up to 6 persons. Cost is $35.00 and require advance registration. Register here.

Detailed skills include naming of bike parts and how to:

Complete a pre-ride safety check, repair and patch a flat tire, adjust brakes and gears, check for loose bearings, clean and oil a chain, and identify parts of the bike.

Ride Smart Cycle Education

Our education programs are designed to develop practical life-long skills through safe cycling. Using the Ontario physical health and education curriculum, our program is engaging and interactive, equipping students with new skills and cycling abilities. Ride Smart skills create safer riders and safer future drivers. The program is based on two reputable sources: CAN-Bike, the national standard for safe cycling programs, and the Guide to Ride curriculum created by Physical and Health Education Canada. Experienced instructors will be present at all Ride Smart events.
